Lionel Messi is helping to lure another talent to the United States of America, with Athletic Bilbao star Inaki Williams keen to follow the ‘American dream’ and play outside of Europe.
The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner left European football in the summer of 2023 after a spell with Paris Saint-Germain and decided to play for Inter Miami. He made an immediate impact in Florida, winning the League Cup and helping to raise the profile of the competition in the United States.
He has been joined in Miami by Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba, with speculation suggesting Luis Suarez and Luka Modric could also follow a similar path.
Williams is another who hopes to play with Messi, with the 29-year-old striker saying in an interview: “Of course I’m playing well in Bilbao, but I would like one day, when I’m not so useful in Bilbao, to continue my career in the United States because it is a place where I would like to live for a year or two. We asked God to cross paths with Leo again.”
Williams is currently in the United States as his national team Ghana will play a luxury friendly with Mexico and America.
He has spent his entire career to date at Athletic Bilbao, as a Basque native, and is close to 400 appearances for them.
