Lionel Messi has won the Ballon d’Or for the eighth time in his career, which is a historic achievement and at the same time a record.
No player in the history of football has managed to win the biggest individual award so many times.
The Argentine managed to beat Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe to win the prestigious award.
The Argentine completed his football career in Qatar when he led Argentina to the World Cup, while also scoring seven goals and being named player of the tournament in five matches.
2) Erling Haaland
The Norwegian striker had the best debut season we have seen in Europe for a long time. Haaland scored 52 goals in 53 games for Manchester City. His goals helped the Citizens win the treble. If Messi didn’t beat them all at the World Cup, Haaland would be the clear winner of the award this year.
To compensate Haaland, UEFA named him the best player in Europe for 2023.
3) Kylian Mbappe
The Frenchman also had a great season for club and country. Mbappe threatened to take the World Cup trophy out of Messi’s hands in Qatar when he scored a hat-trick in Qatar. He finished the tournament as the top scorer with eight goals.
Mbappe also scored 41 goals and 10 assists in 43 games for PSG. But, he ultimately failed to win a serious trophy, except here only Ligue 1. That is why he is expected to finish only third this year.
