Barcelona’s trip to face Shakhtar could be cut short after the hostage situation in Hamburg

Barcelona can secure their place in the knockout stages of the Champions League on Tuesday night.

A win over Shakhtar Donetsk would see them move nine points clear of the third-placed Ukrainian champions in Group H with just two games remaining, meaning the Blaugrana are out of reach.

Due to the ongoing war in Ukraine, the match will be played in Hamburg, with Shakhtar as the “home” team. However, Barcelona have remained concerned about traveling to the German city, as the only airport in Hamburg is currently closed due to a hostage situation.

As Mundo Deportivo has revealed, a man is currently holding his four-year-old daughter hostage at the airport.

There is a large police presence and as a result the airport is currently closed. Barcelona are expected to fly to Hamburg on Monday and if the situation continues until then, they may be forced to change their plans.

First of all, the hope is that all parties involved in this situation can reach an amicable conclusion without any escalation.
