Barcelona are unable to sign Vitor Roque in January

Barcelona look as though they will be unable to sign Vitor Roque this winter, despite telling the 18-year-old Brazilian that this would be the case in recent months.

Last summer their move for Roque, €30m plus a further €31m in bonuses was announced with a summer transfer deadline of 2024, but it was widely reported that Roque was likely to arrive in January.

While Barcelona are working to be able to sign in January, they will give Roque final news on the matter next week.

According to the medium RAC1, the arrival of Roque is currently ruled out by the Catalan club, as they do not have space in their salary cap.

Already around €130m above their cap, the operating margin they have is dependent on sales and savings and while it’s impossible to know how much they currently have, Roque’s arrival is likely to require an extra €10-15m.

That will be good news for Xavi, who was keener on the idea of looking for a short-term solution to the defensive midfielder position, while sporting director Deco was more keen to press ahead with Roque’s move.

Whether that situation changes is another matter, although it doesn’t look like there will be any major departures in January.
