He publicly supports Xavi, but Joan Laporta is looking at the coach of his rival from La Liga

Barcelona are publicly very supportive of Xavi Hernandez as their coach, but privately they are starting to look at other options.

President Joan Laporta has been adamant the club is fully behind Xavi, telling Sport he was the right man for the job.

“I want to make it very clear, like Deco and my board directors, that we are fully on the side of our coach and that we are proud to have Xavi as a coach for his professional and humane quality. Here we are a group. At this moment it is very important to be together”, he declared.

However, as revealed by Bar Canaletes, Girona coach Michel Sanchez has been scouted by Barcelona as a possible future coach. Girona lead after 13 games with 11 wins and have played the best football in the division so far and that is thanks to Michel.

If Xavi fulfills Barcelona’s objectives, he has no reason for immediate concern. While the Blaugrana may be struggling at present, La Liga rules stipulate that a coach can only manage one team during the season, so any changes will have to be made next summer.

Towards the end of last season, there were already remarks that the Barcelona hierarchy were impressed with Michel’s work, and they are no doubt even more enthralled by his work at Girona this season, as are many in Spain.

It should be noted that it has taken Michel almost three seasons to get his Girona side playing this way, although he has steadily improved them, taking the Catalans through the play-offs to La Liga 2, on the brink of a place European champions last season, all the way to the top of the league as they currently are. Few others can boast a better trajectory over the same period of time.
