Ivan Rakitic is unhappy that Sevilla only picked up a point against Villarreal on Sunday in front of their home fans, but publicly backed coach Diego Alonso, whose resignation is being called for by fans.
Kike Salas scored in the 75th minute for 1-0, but just two minutes later Villarreal equalized through Morales.
“We trid, we fought, we didn’t give up. The team showed its desire. Once again, I thank the fans for their support”, declared Rakitic for Movistar television.
The fans are unhappy as even the new coach Alonso has not been able to turn around the bad start of the season. Since Alonso, the former Uruguay coach, was benched in October, Sevilla have managed just one win in ten games.
“We have maximum confidence in the coach”, emphasized the vice-captain of Sevilla, Rakitic. “Football is just cruel because we attacked, took the lead with difficulty and then immediately conceded a goal,” he added. He admitted the fans did not deserve such a run of poor results, which left Sevilla 15th out of 20 first division clubs and bottom of their Champions League group.
“But we are not without energy, we have not lowered our heads, so I believe that we will finally get the victory that we need so much”, concluded Rakitic, who played throughout the match.
Sevilla, last year’s Europa League winners, have come under fire in recent days from fans who turned up to training last month to tell the players they were unhappy. In the last five matches, their players have received three defeats and two draws.
