It’s no secret that Barcelona have had problems on the right wing in recent years. Since Dani Alves left the club at the end of his first spell in 2016, no one has been able to fill his position, despite numerous players being signed to fill the Brazilian’s void.
Barcelona had hoped that would be behind them for at least this season after Joao Cancelo arrived from Manchester City in the summer.
However, the Portuguese has proven to be far more useful on the left wing, where he has replaced Alejandro Balden in recent weeks.
This has led Xavi Hernandez to use centre-backs in the right wing area.
Jules Kounde was used there last season but has publicly admitted he doesn’t like playing out of position. Likewise, Ronald Araujo, who has played there recently – is of the same opinion.
As such, Xavi is facing quite a problem. He does not have a player at his disposal who wants to play on the right side of defense as he wants his team to deploy.
Kounde is likely to remain there for now, at least, after impressing there against Atletico Madrid, but Barcelona could look to next summer’s transfer window to address this seemingly endless issue.
