A Derby d’Italia is looming in the transfer market as Serie A leaders Inter and Juventus continue to pursue the signature of Napoli midfielder Piotr Zielinski.
The Polish international is one of the most sought-after names in the Serie A market, as he is currently set to become available as a free agent at the end of the 2023/24 season.
A key component of Napoli’s 2022/23 title-winning season, Zielinski has since been linked with a move away and is said to have turned down an attractive offer from Saudi Arabia in the summer to stay in Serie A for another year.
Although Napoli would ideally like to keep Zielinski in the team for as long as possible, there has not been much evidence to suggest a renewal is imminent.
Pending his availability in the summer, teams have begun to circle the Stadio Maradona.
According to Il Corriere dello Sport , Inter and Juventus are currently leading the race for the 30-year-old’s signature.
For Zielinski, there is a familiarity with Juventus, as Bianconeri sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli already knows him well from their time together at Napoli.
Giuntoli’s Nerazzurri counterparts Piero Ausilio and director Beppe Marotta are also willing to push forward to bring Zielinski to the Meazza.
Il Corriere suggests that either club would likely have to offer Zielinski a contract with a higher salary than he currently earns. This figure currently stands at 5 million euros per season.
Over a four-year deal, this would amount to a minimum cost of €20 million, realistically closer to €25 million, plus any signing bonuses, which, again, could add several million to the cost of the total package.
