Manchester United target Frenkie de Jong has informed his Barcelona teammates that he could leave the club in the summer of 2022.
The Dutchman was the midfielder coach Erik ten Hag wanted in the summer when he joined the club.
However, United were unable to agree a deal for De Jong despite agreeing a fee with Barcelona.
De Jong’s Barcelona team-mate Gavi told La Vanguardia this week: “I admire Frenkie. When he said he could leave, I got upset and told him what I had.”
“Thank God that he did not leave and is still with us.”
The deal between United and De Jong fell through due to the Dutch midfielder’s €20m deferred wages, which Barca said they would not pay if he left.
