Nico Williams’ agent’s comments set off alarm bells for Barcelona and Real Madrid

Athletic Bilbao star Nico Williams is one of the top stars in the Basque country, and has a good chance of starting for Spain at Euro 2024, so it’s no surprise that renewing his contract is being treated as a matter of state in Bilbao. Just when everything seemed to be done, the agent of Williams has pierced the ears of several clubs in Europe.

Barcelona and Real Madrid have all been linked with Williams in recent months, although the La Liga giants are only thought to be interested if they can get the Spaniard for free.

In recent weeks it was revealed that a deal was close, while Williams himself has told the Basques to be calm about his renewal. However, Felix Tainta, his agent, will have made a number of phone calls today to the Bilbao hierarchy.

“In a negotiation and a future plan between the two parties, it is Athletic who must listen to the player and must try to reach an agreement that is good for both parties, always starting from the basis that the contract ends in a few months, don’t forget us”.

“There is no final offer from the club or the player. The one who has to decide about his future is the player”, Tainta told El Correo.

Williams is one of the most difficult wingers to stop in Europe at his best, although he wants to improve his finishing.

At just 22, it wouldn’t be a surprise if there was a lot of interest in him this January, unless a deal is struck.

It may be that Tainta faces a minor hurdle beyond the rough terms that have also been destroyed, but the pressure is now on Athletic Bilbao to get a deal done as soon as possible.
